Duplex 2205 Seamless Pipe
2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe starts as a pierced billet, is elongated over a mandrel, and is finished to size. No weld line runs through the wall, so riser spools specify this route.

MLTI Private Limited (Moonlight Tube Industries) is an Indian manufacturer, supplier and exporter of Duplex Steel S32205 pipe, in production since 2008. Our 2205 duplex pipe is made to ASTM A790 / ASME SA-790, which is the specification for seamless and welded ferritic-austenitic pipe, and electric fusion-welded lengths are made to ASTM A928.

Seamless lengths start from a pierced billet, so nothing runs through the wall that behaves differently from the parent metal. Welded lengths close without filler. That puts ERW inside the SA-790 route, since the specification draws its line at filler metal rather than at the heat source, and the seam then goes through the same solution anneal as the rest of the pipe. Every length, either route, passes a hydrostatic or nondestructive electric test before dispatch. UNS S32205 has the Werkstoff number 1.4462 and an austeno-ferritic structure with roughly equal amounts of ferrite and austenite. SA-790 fixes chromium at 22.0 to 23.0%, nickel at 4.5 to 6.5%, molybdenum at 3.0 to 3.5%, and nitrogen at 0.14 to 0.20%. The standard specifies a tensile minimum of 655 MPa, a yield minimum of 450 MPa, 25% elongation, and hardness capped at 290 HBW. Duplex 2205 is ferromagnetic, unlike the 300-series grades, and its yield strength allows a thinner wall at the same design pressure.
Our envelope for 2205 stainless steel pipe ranges from 1/8" NB to 10" NB in SCH 5S, 10S, 20S, 40S, and 80S. Seawater circuits, gathering lines, and bleach plant headers absorb most of the tonnage. In-house PMI, tensile and hardness testing back every dispatch, and each consignment is shipped under EN 10204 3.1 certification.

Chemistry separates alloy 2205 pipe from the earlier 22Cr duplex registration. The difference lies in three elements: chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, each held to a narrower band. Element limits set by SA-790 for UNS S32205 are given in the table below, in weight percent.
| Element | Composition (%) |
|---|---|
| Carbon (C) | 0.030 max |
| Manganese (Mn) | 2.00 max |
| Phosphorus (P) | 0.030 max |
| Sulphur (S) | 0.020 max |
| Silicon (Si) | 1.00 max |
| Chromium (Cr) | 22.0 to 23.0 |
| Nickel (Ni) | 4.5 to 6.5 |
| Molybdenum (Mo) | 3.0 to 3.5 |
| Nitrogen (N) | 0.14 to 0.20 |
| Iron (Fe) | Balance |
Nitrogen at a minimum of 0.14% re-forms austenite in the weld heat-affected zone and raises pitting resistance. On the PREN formula Cr + 3.3Mo + 16N, the SA-790 limits give this duplex stainless steel a figure between 34 and 38.
Design calculations are based on the specified minima, as stated in SA-790 for solution-annealed pipe tested to ASTM A370. Tensile and hardness requirements for Duplex S32205 are set out in the table below.
| Property | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Tensile strength, min | 655 MPa (95 ksi) |
| Yield strength, min | 450 MPa (65 ksi) |
| Elongation in 50 mm (2 in.), min | 25% |
| Hardness, max (Brinell) | 290 HBW |
| Hardness, max (Rockwell) | 30 HRC |
That 450 MPa yield floor is roughly two and a half times what SA-312 asks of austenitic 316L pipe, so a duplex line often carries the same pressure one schedule lighter. Hardness is a ceiling, not a target. A reading above 290 HBW fails the specification; it does not mean a better pipe.
Designations corresponding to UNS S32205 pipe across the principal national standards are listed in the table below.
| Standard | Designation |
|---|---|
| UNS | UNS S32205 |
| EN / Werkstoff (Europe) | EN 1.4462 / X2CrNiMoN22-5-3 |
| JIS (Japan) | SUS 329J3L; SUS329J3LTP for pipe |
| GB (China) | S22053 / 022Cr23Ni5Mo3N (earlier 00Cr22Ni5Mo3N) |
| AFNOR (France) | Z3 CND 22-05 Az |
| BS (UK) | 318S13 |
Mill certificates often carry both UNS S32205 and the older 22Cr duplex registration against one heat, since an analysis tightened to the S32205 window satisfies the wider one. DIN 1.4462 and EN 1.4462 denote the same Werkstoff number.
5 variants of 2205 duplex stainless steel pipe are held in stock: two manufacturing routes and three section profiles. Route governs pressure duty and cost per metre; profile governs how load is carried.

2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe starts as a pierced billet, is elongated over a mandrel, and is finished to size. No weld line runs through the wall, so riser spools specify this route.

Welded 2205 duplex stainless pipe closely resembles SA-790, so an ERW seam fuses the strip edges with no filler added, and a solution anneal afterwards restores the ferrite-austenite balance across the weld zone. Past a 6-inch bore, its metre rate drops below seamless.

Round is the only profile that SA-790 and ASME B36.19M dimension, and it covers the whole nominal bore range tabulated below. Seawater mains and pressure piping use 2205 pipes.

Square sections in this grade are rolled to an agreed side dimension and wall rather than a schedule, since B36.19M defines no square profile. Platform framing in chloride-laden plant areas uses them.

Rectangular Duplex Stainless Steel S32205 pipe follows the same forming route to the width, depth, and wall agreed in the order. The unequal section resists bending about its major axis, which is suitable for skid bases.
Sixteen nominal bores and five schedules make up our standard envelope for duplex 2205 pipe; anything outside it is rolled to order. Wall thickness by bore and schedule is given in the size table below, dimensioned to ASME B36.19M.

Five sectors absorb most of the high-performance duplex 2205 pipe we ship, each limited by chloride attack rather than general corrosion.

Offshore process piping, produced-water lines, and gas gathering headers run in 2205 duplex pipe because chloride stress corrosion cracking rules out the 300-series grades. The 450 MPa yield figure cuts topside weight.

Reactor circulation loops, acid dilution lines and heat exchanger piping in chlor-alkali and fertiliser plants use Alloy 2205. Molybdenum at 3.0 to 3.5% holds the passive film where 316L pits.

Multi-stage flash brine headers, ballast piping and cooling water mains take 2205 pipes at ambient seawater temperature. A PREN near 35 holds off crevice attack under gaskets, though stagnant chlorinated seawater is the limit.

Digester liquor lines, bleach plant transfer piping, and FGD absorber recirculation runs carry warm acidic chloride. Duplex 2205 holds that duty at a lower alloy cost than the super-austenitic grades.

Brine injection lines, salt-laden CIP circuits, and evaporator piping in sugar and dairy plants specify this grade, where 316L pits under chloride residues. A smooth pickled bore matters as much as alloy content.
SA-790 requires solution annealing between 1020°C and 1100°C, followed by rapid cooling in air or water, and every length is supplied in that condition. Slow cooling through the 700°C to 950°C band precipitates the sigma phase, and toughness doesn't return without re-annealing.
Welding follows the same logic. Heat input has to sit inside a defined window: too fast a cool leaves excess ferrite; too slow a cool forms intermetallics. ER2209 filler to AWS A5.9 is the consumable SA-790 name for seam repair.
There's a point where this grade is the wrong specification. Continuous service above 300°C belongs to other materials because prolonged exposure embrittles the ferrite phase; ASME code coverage stops at 316°C. Toughness also falls away below about -50°C.
Duplex Steel S32205 pipes are shipped and packed with care to protect product quality during transit and ensure all export requirements are met.
Nickel and molybdenum settle daily, so the duplex 2205 pipe price moves week to week, and no fixed price list survives a quarter. The price ranges from ₹600–₹850 per kg and US$6.32–$8.95 per kg. Seven variables set the duplex S32205 pipe price: bore, wall, schedule, route, profile, quantity, and test scope. Certification costs more here than on an austenitic grade, since ferrite counts add to the test scope. An order drawn from ready stock for fast delivery is quoted differently from a rolling programme.
Buyers return to Moonlight Tubes for certified material, approved grades and stock that ships on schedule. Every order is backed by documented quality, a wide size range and delivery commitments we hold to.
ASTM A790 / ASME SA-790 covers Duplex Steel S32205 pipe in seamless and welded form. Electric fusion-welded pipe made with filler metal is ordered to ASTM A928 instead.
They are separate UNS registrations with different chemistry windows. SA-790 holds S32205 to 22.0 to 23.0% chromium, 3.0 to 3.5% molybdenum, and 0.14 to 0.20% nitrogen. S31803 is wider: 21.0 to 23.0% chromium, 2.5 to 3.5% molybdenum, and 0.08 to 0.20% nitrogen. A heat analyser inside the S32205 window also sits inside the S31803 window, which is why one heat is often dual-certified to both. SA-790 also sets a higher tensile minimum for S32205: 655 MPa against 620 MPa for S31803.
EN 1.4462 and X2CrNiMoN22-5-3 in Europe, SUS 329J3L in Japan, S22053 in China, and Z3 CND 22-05 Az in France all correspond to this grade. DSS 2205 and SS 2205 are shop abbreviations for it.
For chloride service, it performs better. Yield strength is around two and a half times higher, and a PREN of 34 to 38 puts pitting resistance above 316L. In strong reducing acids, the comparison reverses.
Continuous service shouldn't go above 300°C. Longer exposure embrittles the ferrite phase through sigma and alpha-prime formation, and ASME code coverage for this grade ends at 316°C.
Both routes are supplied under SA-790. Welded pipe to that specification is closed autogenously without filler metal, while filler-metal EFW pipe follows ASTM A928.
Our range covers 1/8" NB to 10" NB, 10.3 mm to 273.1 mm outside diameter, in SCH 5S, 10S, 20S, 40S and 80S, with walls from 1.24 mm to 12.70 mm.
